1. SEBTS Chapel - Adrian Rogers March 16, 1993

Adrian Rogers was the pastor of Bellevue Baptist Church in Memphis, TN and former President of the Southern Baptist Convention. The service begins with President Paige Patterson announcing a prayer request for a staff member’s son, and one of the trustees, Jerry Holcomb, gives a word of prayer (00:00-02:19). Patterson welcomes the Southeastern Board of Trustees to campus, and he gives a shofar to two trustees who are rotating off the board (02:20-06:46). Adrian Rogers is introduced as the chapel speaker (06:47-08:23). Rogers begins his sermon by reading from 1 Corinthians 1:18-25, and the theme of his message is about the true gospel of Christ (8:24-11:26). The first point of Rogers’ sermon is about the method of God’s salvation, and he states that the cross is the only way to salvation, a method that slays human boasting (11:27-26:08). The second point of Rogers’ sermon is about the calling of the saints through the cross of Christ, and he reads 1 Cor. 1:26-30 to state that God has chosen the weak and foolish in the world to confound the wise (26:09-36:00). Rogers’ final point of his sermon is about the method of God’s servants and how it undercuts human pride, and he reads 1 Cor. 2:1-5 to state that the Christian’s aim as servants of God is to proclaim Christ and him crucified (36:01-40:37).

2. SEBTS Convocation - William Wallace Finlator January 15, 1985

William Wallace Finlator was the pastor of Pullen Memorial Baptist Church. The service begins with the procession of the faculty accompanied by organ music (00:00-07:19). President Randall Lolley gives a word of prayer, and he welcomes the newcomers to the Southeastern family (07:20-10:22). Morris Ashcraft, Dean of the Faculty, gives the Middler Award for Systematic Theology to Marian Burcky and Loral Link (10:23-11:43). Lolley gives a word of appreciation to Robert Color who endowed the Middler Award, he introduces the Spring 1985 teaching team, he gives a word of thanks to Dr. Fred Sandusky who is up for retirement, he announces the evening classes, and he announces a chapel series on the great texts from the Bible (11:44-16:56). William Wallace Finlator is introduced as the convocation speaker (16:57-18:49). Finlator begins his sermon by giving a good word about Southeastern and the history of his relationship with the seminary (18:50-22:26). Finlator asks the question “can the gospel be preached in America today,” and he quotes Jesus by saying, “What is impossible with man is possible with God (22:27-27:12). He criticizes American society and the government for not caring for the poor, and he gives five methods for sharing the gospel with Americans: the sheep’s clothing method, the future shock method, the more to follow method, the honest slant method, and the extra-curricular method (27:13-51:38). Finlator closes by stating that the gospel can be shared in America hardly by hopefully (51:39-54:51). The service ends with a word of prayer (54:52-55:32).

3. Dr. Cal Guy interview

La description:
Dr. Cal Guy was the Emeritus Professor of Missions at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. The interview begins with Dr. Guy giving a background of his life in ministry and his interest in missions (00:00-04:23). He speaks about the mission vision of D.A McGavern that emphasizes bringing people to Christ, and he talks about the difficulty McGavern had in getting his books published and his vision to be accepted by evangelicals (04:24-11:16). Dr. Guy then speaks on McGavorn’s influence on his teaching, and he talks about the slow acceptance and implementation of McGavorn’s church growth and mission strategies in the Southern Baptist Convention (11:17-18:44). He points to the clarity of the mission strategy of the SBC as being connected to McGavorn’s influence (18:45-23:56). Dr. Guy believes that McGavern’s influence was a seed that flourished into the modern mission strategy of Southern Baptists, though there are now other components that did not originate with McGavern (23:57-26:30). Dr. Guy gives a final word praising the Lord for the opportunity he has had to train and recruit future missionaries (26:31-32:07).
