Walter B. Shurden was Professor of Church History at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. The service begins with a word of prayer (00:00-00:50). Walter B. Shurden is introduced as the Carver-Barnes Lecturer (00:51-06:25). Shurden’s lecture is entitled “The Southern Baptist Synthesis: Is it Cracking,” and he begins by stating that Southern Baptists have built a synthesis that began in the eighteenth century that is starting to erode (06:26-11:12). He states that the Southern Baptist tradition began in Charleston, SC, and that tradition had five characteristics: pietistic puritanism, Calvinistic confessionalism, quasi connectionism, church liturgicalism, and a commitment to theological education, all defined by order (11:13-18:10). Shurden then moves to the Sandy Creek tradition of Southern Baptists which was defined by its ardor, and it had four characteristics: revivalism, charismatic ministry, rugged independence, and strict biblicism (18:11-25:04). He then speaks about the Georgia tradition of Southern Baptists which was defined by local color, and this tradition was characterised by denominationalism and sectionalism (25:05-31:10). He then speaks about the Tennessee tradition of Southern Baptists which was defined by questionable honor, and this tradition gave Southern Baptist a sense of identity based on a fallacious history (31:11-33:18). Shurden believes that denominationalism won out and brought these four traditions together, but denominationalism is under attack (33:19-40:17). He believes there have been four stress points that is bringing cracks to the Southern Baptist synthesis, and these stress points are cultural stress, denominational stress, and financial stress (40:18-45:14). Shurden concludes his lecture by stating that the Southern Baptist synthesis is not breaking, but it is being reshaped (45:15-48:05). The service ends with a word of prayer (48:06-49:01).

2. SEBTS Conference - Quentin Lockwood November 2, 1982

This message was part of the Ministry with the Small Rural Church Workshop. Quentin Lockwood was Director of the Rural Missions Department of the Home Mission Board. The conference begins with Lockwood introducing himself, and he gives the title of his lecture, “The Call of the Small” (00:00-00:48). Lockwood begins his lecture with the subject of calling, and he reminds the audience that the call of God comes to people regardless of location or size of service (00:49-05:45). Lockwood moves the subject of “small,” and he lays out the demographic numbers of Southern Baptist churches across America (05:46-09:30). Lockwood gives six factors on the size of churches, and the first is knowing everyone in the congregation, the second is the relationships among members, the third is the transiency of pastors, the fourth is financial resources, the fifth is the pastor’s workload, and the sixth is congregational leadership (09:31-20:35). Lockwood speaks about the many advantages of being a small church pastor throughout the rest of his lecture (20:36-47:05).

6. Dr. Robert Naylor interview

Descrição:
Dr. Robert Naylor was President Emeritus of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. The interview begins with Dr. Naylor giving a background of his life in ministry (00:00-04:25). He speaks about his time as a trustee at Southwestern in the last year of the presidency of L.R. Scarborough and in the presidencies of E.D. Head and J. Howard Williams (04:26-06:15). Dr. Naylor believes that the Great Depression and World War II were great blessings for Southern Baptists in helping them unify and see the need for missions (06:16-09:09). He also believes that the events of the early 20th century helped Baptist financially (09:10-11:26). Dr. Naylor speaks about the growth of the seminaries after World War II and how the time oversees fighting prepared many Southern Baptist for international missions (11:27-15:20). Dr. Naylor talks about the “75 Million Campaign,” and he praises L.R. Scarborough for his contribution to the post-war growth of Southern Baptist’s initiatives (15:21-18:56). Dr. Naylor believes that Southwestern has made a great contribution for Southern Baptists regarding evangelism and missions (18:57-21:06). He believes that the converts made during the mid-century ultimately made a great impact on world missions (21:07-22:38). The interview concludes with Dr. Naylor speaking on the culmination of events of the early 20th century led to the great evangelism and missions push of Southern Baptists in the later 20th century (22:39-24:30).
