- Dwight W. Cumbee was visiting Professor of Pastoral Care and Director of the Life Enrichment Center in Raleigh, NC. The service begins with organ music (00:00-02:00). The speaker gives an announcement about a funeral for a community member, and he gives a benediction (02:01-03:40). The speaker reads from John 15:1-17, and he gives a word of prayer (03:41-06:49). The choir sings a song of worship (06:50-09:30). Cumbee begins his sermon with two confessions about the quality of his speaking and his weakness for funny stories, and he gives a funny story about a letter to an insurance company (09:31-15:33). Cumbee’s sermon is on the subject of being a minister, and his first point is that a minister’s relationship with Christ determines how he or she grows (15:34-23:30). Cumbee’s second point is the minister is to be a lover, specifically a lover of God and a lover of others (23:31-28:40). Cumbee concludes his sermon with the final point which is the minister is to be authentic (28:41-30:22). Cumbee ends the service with a benediction (30:23-20:50).

- Description:
- Hugh O. Chambliss was Executive Director of Missions for the Madison Baptist Association in Huntsville, AL. The service begins with a word of prayer (00:00-00:50). The speaker reads Psalm 33:8-12 (00:51-01:32). Ginger Smith sings a song (01:33-04:23). Chambliss begins his sermon by speaking of the joy of being on Southeastern’s campus for the summer term (04:24-05:49). He states that the subject of his sermon is on the minister and his community, and he describes his home community of Huntsville, AL (05:50-10:23). Chambliss first point is that the minister influences the conscience of the community, and he uses the Presbyterian minister Brother Bryan as an example of a minister who held influence over the conscience of the city of Birmingham (10:24-14:40). His second point is that the minister is the counselor of the community (14:41-18:42). His third point is that the minister is the community’s comfort (18:43-22:27). Chambliss concludes his sermon by arguing that the minister can take on the three roles of conscience, counselor, and comforter of the community because he is called by God to take on these roles (22:28-25:30).

- Description:
- John Rowan Claypool, IV was the pastor of Northminster Baptist Church in Jackson, MS. The service begins with a word of prayer and the singing of a hymn (0:00:00-0:02:26). Theodore Adams introduces John Rowan Claypool, IV as the Adams Lecturer (0:02:27-0:05:30). The choir sings a song of worship (0:05:31-0:07:54). John Claypool begins his lecture by speaking on the privilege to share a stage with Theodore Adam (0:07:55-0:09:04). He continues to speak on the question from the previous lecture about the aim of Christian ministry, and he says that the problem of our restless fulfilment begins with the first humans who chose fulfilment outside of God (01:09:05-0:15:22). Claypool moves to the topic of the current lecture, and he first investigates the nature of humans being image bearers and the need in ministry to value image bearers (0:15:23-0:42:11). He brings up the story of the prodigal son, and he uses the story to describe the process of a good minister faithfully working to bring the lost soul back to Christ (0:42:12-0:55:20). Claypool concludes his lecture by summarizing his key point that ministers are to help remind people of who they truly are as image bearers created for God’s good works (0:55:21-1:01:02). The service ends with a word of prayer and a benediction (1:01:03-1:02:17).

- Description:
- John Rowan Claypool, IV was the pastor of Northminster Baptist Church in Jackson, MS. The service begins with a word of prayer (0:00:00-0:00:52). President Randall Lolley gives the community announcements, and he leads the audience in a word of prayer (0:00:53-0:04:16). John Rowan Claypool, IV is introduced as the Adams Lecturer (0:04:17-0:10:33). The choir sings a song of worship (0:10:34-0:13:36). John Claypool begins his lecture by speaking on the influence Theodore Adams has had on his life, and he asks the question of what he personally is about (0:13:37-0:19:11). His lecture centers on the objective question of what the aim of a Christian ministry is, and he first tells a story of a friend in ministry who suffered from what he called “cotton candy syndrome” (0:19:12-0:27:59). Claypool’s main idea is that humans by nature are restlessly looking for fulfilment, and he points to the message of Christ saying that fulfilment is not found somewhere else but God’s grace found in our hearts (0:28:00-1:02:57). The service ends with a word of prayer (1:02:58-1:03:37).

- Description:
- Jim Grant was from Watts Street Baptist Church in Durham, NC. The service begins with an introduction of Jim Grant (0:00-1:44). After which, the speaker reads a responsive reading (1:45-3:50). Grant’s message is on the “Humanizing of the Professional Holy Man.” Grant begins his message with an introduction concerning personal identity, explaining many people struggle to understand who they are because they have lost their “humanity” (3:51-7:19). In addition, he explains that there is a lack of understanding concerning calling to ministry (7:20-9:39). He explores the benefits of behavioral science in relation to clergy (9:40-14:23). He states that the first step in humanizing clergy is self-examination (14:24-18:03). He adds that the second step in humanizing clergy is teaching human relations (18:04-26:56). He concludes by challenging his audience to know their identity (26:57-27:16). He closes in prayer (27:17-28:06). This chapel is distorted from 12:25-12:46, 17:10-17:23 and 22:40-23:05.

- Description:
- The service begins with the reading of Psalm 24:1-2 (00:20), and an introduction is given for the Reverend Robert C. McClernon, pastor of Watts Street Baptist Church in Durham, NC. From Springfield, Missouri, he received a BA degree from Drury College in Missouri and a Bachelor of Divinity degree from the Federated Faculty of the University of Chicago. He also served as Associate Minister at Myers Park Baptist Church in Charlotte, NC for nine years before coming to pastor at Watts Street (00:43-01:32). The service continues with a responsive reading of Psalm 23 (1:33-2:34) and prayer afterward (2:35-4:51). Robert McClernon begins his message with the prayerful reading of Romans 5:1-5 (04:52-05:52). McClernon intends to humbly share with his listeners some of his own understandings of what makes us who are we to be as ministers of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Unless the clergy indicates to those whom we serve that God has called us to offer all of ourselves to Him in service, we cannot hope anyone else will do this after us. Firstly, God has called us to be theologians who love Him with our minds (05:53-09:58). Secondly, God has called us to be theologians who have ears and can minister by listening well (09:59-11:57). Thirdly, God has called us to have realistic self-conceptions, understanding that we must remember our humanity and weaknesses in our ministry as “professional” clergy and so protect ourselves from becoming “holy phonies.” According to McClernon, the gospel must become incarnate in us so that others see it as genuine, powerful, and effective for them as well (11:58-26:35). He then ends the service in prayer to God (26:36-27:54).
