1. SEBTS Convocation - Lewis Addison Drummond April 16, 1991

- Lewis Addition Drummond was the 4th president of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and Professor of the History and Theology of Evangelism. The service opens with a word of prayer from Dr. George Braswell (00:00-02:14). President Lewis A. Drummond gives a word of greeting for the day of convocation for the inauguration of the Center for Great Commission Studies, and he introduces the seminar leaders and plenary speaker, all the conference attendees, and the board of trustees (02:15-06:25). Dr. Wayne McDill briefly speaks about the importance of evangelism, the Great Commission, and missions for Southern Baptists and Southeastern Seminary, and he presents a theme for the convocation service of “Heart for the World” (06:26-11:25). Drummond reads from Matthew 28:16-20, and he begins his sermon with his first point that the fulfilment of the Great Commission comes through the power of the Holy Spirit (11:26-18:17). Drummond’s second point is that God calls us to make disciples and not decisions, and he says that the power of the gospel message is Jesus Christ and his defeat of death in the resurrection (18:18-26:36). Drummond’s third point is that we are to baptize converts into the community of God and teach them the Scriptures, and he says that God desires believers to know and be like Jesus Christ (26:37-32:35). Drummond’s final point is that we need the presence of God, and he says God’s presence must reach the ends of the earth (32:36-37:15). Drummond concludes his sermon with a Great Commission litany (37:16-39:56). Dr. Delos Miles closes the convocation with a benediction (39:57-40:33).

2. SEBTS Chapel - Alan Compton November 2, 1965

He was a missionary and a representative of Radio and Television Works of Missionary Fields of Latin America (10:00-11:37). Even its individualized interpretation over the years has resulted in talking about “what we are doing” instead of “what God is doing” (11:38-15:23). His text is taken from Acts 1, and he warns that discipleship has become the job of those called into professional ministry, when it is the necessary responsibility and call of God for every Christian. We can only have compassion for the world by being disciples of Jesus Christ, and we must be willing to go wherever God may call us (15:24-25:17). Obeying the Great Commission becomes less about what you do and more about the witness you become in Christ (25:18-27:29). We cannot depend on enthusiasm and faith by themselves to carry out this work, but we must depend on the Holy Spirit (27:30-34:43). He ends the service in prayer, but the words seem to cut out before he is done speaking (34:44-35:51).

Dr. Copeland explains that rejoicing over these victories can lead to pride, conceit, and arrogance, which can ultimately lead to the manipulation of people (17:28-17:50). He further states that succumbing to such arrogance of power means joining the enemy (17:51-19:15). He mentions that because we are not always victorious over evil, we should not make victories a source of rejoicing (19:16-20:15). Though Jesus said nothing can hurt us, we can still experience the power of the enemy and defeat (20:16-22:06). Dr. Copeland quotes Charles W. Ransom, regarding not allowing others to dissuade you from the call of ministry (22:07-25:31). He expresses that we should rejoice that we are saved and that we are spreading the Word (25:32-26:19). The Word is our drink, food, air, and life and it should bring us joy (26:20-27:01). A word of prayer closes the service (27:02-27:25).

He reads the Great Commission and invites people to come forward in answer to God’s call as a hymn is sung (cut) (39:57-43:07). A word of prayer closes the service (43:08-43:42).

McMillian believes in Jesus’ second coming as well as judgment; however, he points out that there is also daily judgment (18:27-19:28). When we fail to prioritize missions, we are already being judged (19:29-19:43). McMillian compares the hopelessness that those in Samaria were experiencing due to a famine in 2 Kings 6 and 7 to today’s society (19:44-23:53). Despite this hopelessness, he mentions that there is good news: the gift of the Gospel (23:54-26:00). As Christians, we must be willing to risk everything to perform our responsibility of sharing this gift with the world (26:01-27:13). McMillian informs that unfortunately a loss of willingness to spread the Gospel has increased (28:38-29:38). He encourages individuals to find a reason to live through missions (29:39-31:04). He strongly states that churches need to make missions their priority and that hesitation leads to loss of missions (31:05-37:11). We must share the good news out of love as is required by the Great Commission (37:12-38:35). McMillian ends his address by comparing the story of not training his dog to the hesitation of not being involved in missions (38:36-41:23). The service concludes with a word of prayer and a hymn (41:25-46:35).
