The Standard was established in 1853. It had a national circulation but considered itself the "Baptist organ for Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, and Wyoming."

This circular letter was created from the Northamptonshire Association during their gathering on June 15 and 16, 1802 to address the topic of baptism. The text was composed by Andrew Fuller and printed by Manning and Loring in Boston, Massachusetts in 1804.
