Dr. Reid focuses on the parable of the sower in Mark 4 with the following lesson: as part of God’s kingdom, we are obligated to be diligent students of His Word (18:26-20:13). He breaks down the parable into sections, which consist of an introductory (verses 1-2), Jesus’ presentation of the story (verses 3-9), Jesus’ discussion of the purpose of parables to his disciples (verses 10-12), and Jesus’ explanation of the parable of the sower (verses 14-20) (20:14-21:52). He discusses the call to response in verses 3, emphasizing the theme of listening and understanding (21:53-22:56). Dr. Reid reveals the second theme of sowing the Word after introducing the main character, the sower (22:57-25:54). Within the parable are two groups of people—sowers and hearers of the Word (25:55-27:08). Dr. Reid provides two points of application: theological education is crucial for accurate interpretation of the Word and we must be diligent interpreters of the Word for the sake of others (27:09-32:04). Dr. Reid concludes with speaking of “the privilege of being in God’s kingdom and the responsibility of conveying the truth of the Gospel to others,” stressing the importance of theological education (32:05-33:50). A word of prayer ends the service (33:51-34:25).
