- Description:
- There was no formal introduction for G. Avery Lee, but he was pastor of St. Charles Avenue Baptist Church in New Orleans, Louisiana, and focused his ministry on college/seminary campuses. He made dedicated commitments to bettering race relations and served as Chairman of the Christian Life Commission from 1961-62. He continues his sermon from February 8, 1966, talking about God’s good news of healing for the brokenhearted from Psalm 51:17 (00:00-03:55). Jesus spoke about the New Birth of a life broken by sin as one of His most important focuses, and God desires that we have a broken and contrite heart to be forgiven of our sins (03:56-09:08). David used three Hebrew words to describe his sin against God with Bathsheba. Firstly, peshah communicated his sin was deliberate rebellion against something God strictly had forbidden. Secondly, havon communicated a perversion or distortion from breaking God’s Law. Thirdly, hatah communicated a missing of the mark or goal of what is pleasing to God (09:09-11:02). David also used three words to describe vividly the experience of forgiveness. Firstly, mahah communicated a blotting out or wiping off. Secondly, kabas communicated a washing away. Thirdly, tahēr communicated a declaring to be clean (11:03-11:38). Lee describes more clearly what true contrition and brokenheartedness looks like Biblically, affirming the good news that God is able to heal the brokenhearted and that God uses broken things to make things new. Lee closes his time in prayer, but the prayer is not recorded (11:39-31:19). A brief rewind occurs, and a low shrill follows the audio to its end (26:00-31:19).

10. SEBTS Student Missions Conference - February 19, 1967
- Description:
- An unnamed female speaker begins the address entitled “Faith Dispersed” by telling a story about two creatures and taming. She transitions into how Jesus has tamed human hearts and how our evangelistic process must be a sort of taming (waiting some time while patiently pursuing someone’s trust) as we build bridges in love and understand their struggles in empathy (00:00-11:00). Next, James Y. Green follows up the initial address with an extension of the same title, “Faith Dispersed,” in which he calls his listeners to “jump in” to the world of God’s global mission (11:01-17:34). He mentions pre-requisites, essential presuppositions, and an understanding of suffering that we must have before we can “go out” on mission (17:35-19:13). We must understand not only who we are as Christians but also the social structures we are going into; we must know the presupposition that God is working actively in the world outside of the walls of a church building (19:14-24:59). Also, we must know the value of what we are sharing, not only in personal morality but also in concern for the world (25:00-35:21). We must go out in dispersion in response to the powerful sending God, even the Lord Jesus Christ; our dispersion must be done in relationship with the living God and in relationship with the community of the saints (35:22-40:46). Two reasons for dispersal are an assurance of the significance of being sons of God along with the concern for the world having been (and being) the objects of God’s concern (40:47-44:50). He ends his time in prayer (44:51-45:38), and the service ends with music (45:39-48:38).

He closes his lecture by expressing that conflicts still exist, yet God still remains and the Gospel continues to be preached (46:40-48:36). His lecture, “State Baptist Papers: Reflectors of the Crises,” focuses on how printed papers are better records of current events (9:04-10:00). He summarizes his lecture from the day before: he explains that the lecture dealt with the history of U.S. Baptist missions with a specific focus on the Judsons and Luther Rice and the creation of the Triennial Convention, the Southern Baptist Convention, and state conventions (10:01-10:20). Puckett expresses that documents exist that inform us of what truly happened during the birth of Baptist missions and that Baptist papers mirror these events (10:21-11:39). He chooses ten crises to prove this point, with the first crisis being the mission vs. anti-mission movements of the nineteenth century (11:40-11:59). These movements resulted due to the conflict between general atonement (Arminian theology) and particular atonement (Calvinistic theology) (12:00-12:55). Puckett reveals that Baptist papers reflected this conflict in Maryland (12:56-15:49). The second crisis involved the founding of the Southern Baptist Convention by the Virginia Mission Society which became a large highlight in Baptist papers (15:50-16:24). The third crisis is the Campbellite and Landmark movements, with the former movement involving Alexander Campbell and his view on baptism (16:25-17:15). Biblical Recorder editor Thomas Meredith recorded the errors of this movement (17:16-18:58). Puckett then explains that the Landmark movement viewed its church as the only valid church in accordance with New Testament truth and made an appearances in the Tennessee Baptist Paper and the Kentucky Western Baptist Review (18:59-20:48). The fourth crisis, with which the Kentucky Western Recorder highly involved, was the Witsitt controversy over whether Baptists could be traced back to Jesus’ time (20:49-23:45). Fundamentalism vs. Modernism was the fifth crisis that became popular in Baptist publications, specifically the Oklahoma Baptist Messenger (23:46-27:33). Puckett’s sixth crisis is the Baptist westward movement: some believed that these Baptists were not true Baptists with Reuben Ally, editor of the Virginia Religious Herald, being a strong voice of the conflict (27:34-29:11). Crisis seven is the Southern Baptist Seminary conflict that occurred due to a disagreement between the president and faculty and appeared in multiple papers such as the Kentucky Western Recorder and the Christian Index (29:12-33:16). The Elliot controversy at Mid-Western Seminary also found its way in Baptist papers, with E.S. James, editor of the Texas Baptist Standard leading the way (33:17-36:02). Puckett’s ninth crisis is the struggle of power, especially within the Southern Baptist Convention concerning the presidential position, and he conveys that this crisis caused many papers to suffer as they attempted to record the facts (36:03-38:23). The final crisis is one that occurred at Southeastern and was accurately and completely recorded by the Biblical Recorder (38:24-40:14). Puckett speaks on the problems of editing and recording, focusing on how writers never have complete freedom of words and on how they must strive to record truthfully, yet fairly (40:15-50:54). He then closes with saying that the Baptist mission of the world depends on education and information (52:59-53:59). Puckett is thanked and the congregation is informed that he will be in the Ledford Center for further discussions (52:59-53:59). A word of prayer ends the event (54:00-54:23).

- Robert Lee Richardson, Jr. was Associate Professor of Supervised Ministry. Gene Williams gives a brief word of why he appreciates Southeastern, and he presents a key and check for the Heritage Woods Project (09:18-14:03). Lolley accepts the key and check, and he presents the adjunct faculty for the Spring term (14:04-16:00). Robert Lee Richardson, Jr. is presented as the convocation speaker (16:01-17:21). Richardson begins his sermon by giving his theme of preparation for ministry (17:22-21:55). Richardson’s first point is the image of the minister as the scholarly pastor (21:56-29:32). His second point is the image of the professional minister (29:33-39:54). Richardson’s final point the image of the minister as a wounded healer (39:55-47:40). Richardson concludes his sermon by giving his ideas of how Southeastern can prepare students for ministry (47:41-55:49). Lolley ends the service by reading 2 Timothy 3:17, and he gives a word of prayer (55:50-56:32).
