- Edwin Luther Copeland was Professor of Missions. Dr. Copeland gives an encouraging sermon on how students should seek to grow in their faith. Copeland shares how Jesus was constantly prodding his disciples to exercise their faith. He shares the problems with small faith and closes by telling SEBTS that faith can move mountains and move you to action. Copeland's source text was 1 Peter 1:3-5,8-9. - G. Thomas Halbrooks was Professor of Church History. The service begins with a word of prayer (00:00-01:00). The title and theme of the faculty lecture is “Coming to and Growing in Faith,” and the speaker introduces Dr. William P. Clemmons, Dr. G. Thomas Halbrooks, and Dr. Bruce P. Powers as the faculty lectures (01:01-02:43). - James W. Fowler was a theologian and Professor of Theology and Human Development in the Candler School of Theology at Emory University. This chapel was the first part of the Spring Lectures in March 1983 and titled “Gifting the Imagination of Children.” Chapel opens in prayer (0:00-0:53). Dr. Fowler, the Spring Lecture speaker, is introduced (0:53-5:20). Dr. Fowler beings his lecture by reading Ephesians 4 (5:20-8:00). He states that he wishes to look at gifting the imagination and how to help awaken children’s faith using a developmental approach (8:00-10:55). Dr. Fowler discusses how he and his associates have studied the developmental process of faith and his focus during this lecture on stages of faith (10:55-13:33). Dr. Fowler uses a story to briefly transition to the next stage of the lecture (13:33-16:18). Dr. Fowler overviews the stages of development and how these stages provide different opportunities to help develop faith (16:18-50:23). Dr. Fowler gives the audience a few cautions regarding the stages he’s discussed in relation to faith (50:23-52:00). He concludes his lecture by revisiting the childhood stages and families’ gifts to children’s imagination (52:00-1:01:39). An announcement is made about further lectures by Dr. Fowler and chapel is dismissed with a benediction (1:01:39-1:02:41).

- Fred B. Craddock, Jr. was Bandy Distinguished Professor of Preaching at the Candler School of Theology at Emory University. A word of prayer is given (0:00-1:08). An anthem is sung (cut) (1:09-1:31). Dr. Craddock is introduced as a great teacher and storyteller (1:32-4:33). He enjoys being at the Seminary (4:34-5:58). He speaks on how preaching begins with hearing (5:59-6:28). He reiterates from his first lecture that faith is the whisper and preaching the Gospel is the shout; if they are separated, some will see Christianity as a secret and some will see the Gospel as “common chatter” (6:29-11:08). Dr. Craddock discusses that the liveliness of the words of the Bible, especially in the Gospel, preserve the whisper and the shout and that people choose not to listen to these words due to ignorance (11:09-32:27). He speaks about how George Washington and Abraham Lincoln could have lived longer lives if they had received modern surgical practices to express the possibility that if Jesus had not died He might not have asked God to forgive His ignorant crucifers (32:28-34:28). Dr. Craddock recalls the ignorance of a German friend who would have to wake up every morning to pray and sing hymns as part of the Nazi organization (34:29-35:38). He closes with conveying that “before you can shout it, you must hear the whisper” (35:39-37:14). A word of prayer is given (37:15-37:30). A hymn ends the service (37:31-37:42; the hymn is cut abruptly).
