Dr. Miller, the Dean of Harvard Divinity School, is introduced according to his educational, ministerial, and working background. The title of his message is “Faith Beyond Conformity” (06:20-08:18). Dr. Miller begins by talking about the importance and rarity of actually living in your own epoch instead of trying to keep another epoch alive outside of its time (08:19-19:32). He mentions that three recent breakthroughs in the history of humanity have expanded the reach of human sin: spacial (interstellar) exploration and great power, a deep exploration of the human’s life (psychology), and the new creation of a world order via science, industry, and transportation. He mentions these because it is the task of the openness of faith to unite the inner man with the outer environment so that the two are integrated in meaning (19:33-26:45). The Christian Faith in man is complex, and it must continually respond to the questions raised against it by each epoch’s key figures; to be faithful to the first century but to deny the needs of one’s own century is indeed not Christian at all (26:46-35:55). The Christian Faith reconciles honest contradictions into beautiful unity through reconciliation and atonement (to save life is to lose it, and to lose life now is to save it) (35:56-47:29). The service closes with the reading of Ephesians 3:20-21 (47:30-48:03).

2. SEBTS Chapel - C. Wade Goldston October 14, 1965

The service opens with a reading from a poem by nineteenth century theologian, Walter Rauschenbush, entitled “The Little Post and Gate” (00:00-01:31) and a time of silent prayer to God before John Wright’s “Prayer for Theological Students” is vocalized (01:32-05:04). An introduction is given for the Reverend C. Wade Goldston, Chaplain at Louisburg College in Louisburg, NC, graduate of both Duke Divinity School and Yale University, and a pastor in North Carolina. He was currently returning to SEBTS to teach a course in Methodist Polity, and he was a member of the North Carolina Commission on Town and Country (05:05-05:51). Goldston intends to share from his own Christian witness (05:52-07:58). Firstly, Goldston mentions that we are not only made right with God by faith in Jesus, but we also continue to live by faith (07:59-11:33), ministering with our lives by faith (11:34-12:42). Secondly, he mentions that we can depend upon God to guide us and provide for us (12:43-15:51). Thirdly, God causes everything to work together for good to those who love Him (15:52-19:53). Finally, Goldston shares that we get what we give out (19:54-24:06). He then closes the message in prayer (24:07-24:55).

He then adds that hope is necessary for finding faith during our trials as it provides us the “assurance that our inner strength is greater than our outward problems” (23:29-27:31). We will always face tough times, but hope and the knowledge that God is in control will sustain us (27:32-29:02). God does not disregard those who seek Him so we must be continuously looking to God for enduring faith (29:03-32:00). De Brand concludes with citing from Paul’s epistle to the Corinthians: love is the greatest of the three lasting things of this world (faith, hope, and love) (32:01-33:27). He gives a word of prayer (33:28-34:12).

Cook answers that Jesus’ deeds should give us reason to believe, yet his friend tells him that Jesus’ deeds are not compelling (17:46-20:56). Cook finally tells his friend words and deeds do not form the basis of his faith, but Jesus’ death on the cross (20:57-21:26). Another question is asked: what makes Jesus different from all the other Jews who were crucified? (21:27-22:32). Cook proclaims Jesus as the Son of God whose presence, love, and life give meaning to His words and deeds and who is the basis of the Christian faith (22:33-25:31). Cook ends with saying that Jesus is our light, courage, love, and forgiveness that brings us together before God as His children (25:32-28:14). The sermon is concluded with a word of prayer (28:14-28:59).
