2.SEBTS Chapel - Taylor Clarence Smith November 3, 1988

Thomas Furman Hewitt was Professor of Christian Ethics. C. Michael Hawn was Professor of Church Music (these two names were not announced in the recording, but were in the description section). He returns to his account of the German professor and the soldier to reinforce that in Christ we can overcome death (23:52-26:22). The choir sings another song of worship (26:23-28:28). The service ends with a prayer of commemoration and commitment (28:29-30:47).

4.SEBTS Convocation - Lewis Addison Drummond August 23, 1988

Lewis Addison Drummond was the fourth president of SEBTS. The announcement of President Lewis Drummond being the Chapel speaker for the Fall Convocation is made (0:00-0:08). Drummond begins his sermon, based on Colossians 2:6-7 (21:41-23:04). He focuses on us, as the body of Christ, determining our destiny (23:05-24:34). Titling his sermon “Waking into Destiny,” Drummond speaks of walking in the spirit as a personal experience, but it can also be experienced on a corporate level (25:08-26:18). He informs that there are four principles within the passage from which he read, with one involving walking in godliness as individuals (26:19-31:17). He desires SEBTS to walk in godliness on a more collective level, as a whole (31:18-32:00). Drummond mentions the time when he felt God’s presence at another university and declares that walking in godliness can be the Seminary’s destiny as well (32:01-35:18). Two other principles he speaks of are “getting” and “giving:” since we have received so much from Christ, we should give back to others by sharing Jesus with them (35:19-40:17). Drummond wants SEBTS as an institution to give Jesus to others and to be rooted in the faith so that it can grow and mature as a place of prayer (40:18-47:46). The last principle is gratitude as we have so much to be thankful for in our lives (47:47-51:44). Drummond closes with a goal for SEBTS to glorify Christ by walking in godliness, giving as much as it has received, and showing gratitude (51:45-52:57). A word of prayer concludes the sermon (52:58-53:35).

8.SEBTS Chapel - Sydnor Lorenzo Stealey April 23, 1963

A snippet of April 24, 1963's service by the Student Coordinating Council led by professor Edwin Richmond York plays from 27:25-41:07. and Sydnor Lorenzo Stealey was the first president of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. President Stealey mentions his hopes that the student aid endowment would grow and shares what his future looks like as he prepares to leave the seminary and officially retire. Dr. Stealey reads Ephesians 3:15-19 and Colossians 1:27. Stealey shares that he hopes to be remembered as a man who strived to lead the seminary to the reality of having Christ dwell in them. Dr. Stealey speaks from 5:24-27:24. This was Dr. Stealey's final message as an official of SEBTS.

President Lewis Drummond greets the congregation, welcomes new students, and presents Carson Grissom to bestow the Middler Theological Award (11:34-17:17). Grissom confers the award (17:18-18:25). President Drummond congratulates the student and presents Dr. George Braswell (18:26-19:12). Dr. Braswell introduces Dr. Copeland (19:13-23:15). Dr. Braswell reads Colossians 1:15-23 for Dr. Copeland’s sermon (23:16-24:41). Dr. Copeland is honored to speak for Spring Convocation (24:42-26:26). His sermon focuses on the centrality of the unitive mission of Christ to theological education (26:27-27:58). He defines the Seminary as the intellectual center of the church and theological education as intellectual thinking and researching of the life and work of the church (27:59-30:02). Dr. Copeland discusses that “the unitive mission of Christ is matched by the unitive intellectual mission of theological education (30:03-31:23). He then speaks on three areas where the unitive mission of Christ intersects with the unitive mission of theological education: Western secular culture, religious pluralism (awareness of other religions), and the inner division of Christianity (31:24-47:23). Dr. Copeland speaks of the action needed in the intellectual centers of the church so that the unitive mission of Christ can be executed (47:24-47:58). He concludes with a final word on these three challenges and with encouragement to do our best to fulfill the unitive mission of Christ (47:59-49:21). President Drummond gives a word of prayer (49:22-50:13). A hymn ends the service (50:14-53:56).
